His Nibs.com update --
Off to the Supershow!
August 5th, 2007

Packing is proceeding apace, as we prepare
the Nibmobile for its journey to the nation's
capital and parts south. It will be good to
return to the D.C.
Supershow http://www.pencentral.com/ after a year's hiatus, and to
hopefully rekindle old friendships and spark
new ones.

We'll be offline starting this Tuesday,
August 7th, and won't return until Tuesday or
Wednesday of the following week (something
about government officials wanting to consult
with His Nibs about solutions to national
dilemmas). Anywho, we'll reply to emails and
orders as quickly as possible upon our return.

For those of you attending, we'll be bringing
Wing Sung pens; the full line of Private
Reserve ink (including the new Electric DC
Blue and the fast-dry inks); the
Multifunction brush pens; a small selection
of Duke models; the Artista Sedona (I should
receive my re-stocking order just prior to
departure); and perhaps the last of the
limited edition, painted-inside Nabu pens,
before they're all gone.

I'll also be bringing some Delta models at
an outstanding discount, including the new --
and affordable -- Vintage, as well as the
celluloid Enrico Caruso limited edition --
the theme pen of the D.C. Show (see
a sneak peek below).

I'll also cram in whatever else will fit in
the Nibmobile (I've got to remember to
bring Teresa).

Wing Sung #233

Reminiscent of the Sheaffer TM of the early
1950's, these pens measure about 5-1/2"
capped and a full 6" posted. The pen sports a
steel cap with subtle pinstriping and a
spring-loaded clip. The cap band is marked
with the Chinese characters for 'Wing Sung',
as well as the model number '233' and 'Wing
Sung' in English.

Removing the slip cap -- which securely snaps
back into place -- displays the wrap-around,
conical nib. It's gold-plated steel, and
equates to a western fine. Like most nibs
designed for the Asian market, it's designed
to be firm for writing the more intricate
Chinese characters. The nib is engraved with
the Chinese characters for 'Wing Sung', along
with 'Made in China' written in English.

Also readily apparent is the ambered ink-vue
window, which allows the user to instantly
determine when it's time for a refill.
Unscrewing the barrel reveals the pump-style
filler, for use with bottled ink.

Monteverde Artista Deluxe -- Sedona

The newest addition to the magnificent
Artista line is one of the most gorgeous pens
I've ever seen. It's difficult to capture the
variegated beauty of the special, limited
resin used in its construction. Obtained in
only a small quantity, this Italian resin
quickly had the folks at Monteverde referring
to the pen as the 'Sedona', reflecting upon
the great natural beauty of the rocks in that
portion of Arizona. There was only enough
material to create fewer than 300 of these
gems...so I don't expect them to last long.

Nabu

In 1703, a new art form emerged in China
known as inside (reverse) painting. Clear
glass snuff bottles were hand painted from
the inside out. The process is like
microsurgery combined with extremely fine
artwork but the hand painting is done in
reverse. These have always been prized among
museums and the World's elite.

The meticulous work is completely done by
hand. Highly gifted artists may take weeks
to complete each Nabu pen. Since the
painting is completely done by hand, no two
pens are exactly alike.

Multifunction brush pen

The usual multifunction pen from Asia has a
fountain pen on one end, and a ballpoint on
the other. Here's a truly unique variation on
that theme. This pen has a liquid-ink
rollerball on one end, and a Chinese
calligraphy 'brush' on the other!

Delta Vintage

Here's a quick peek at the new Delta Vintage.
I've not yet completed the webpage, but the
pricing is correct.

Delta Enrico Caruso

The revered and celebrated operatic giant,
Errico Caruso was born February 25, 1873 to a
poor family. He showed an early passion for
music and despite many setbacks and early
critiques that would have completely
discouraged most; the promising young talent
changed his name to Enrico to become one of
the recording industry's first true
superstars and one of the greatest tenors
that ever lived. His voice soared above the
constraints of early recording technology and
his records achieved far greater popularity
than any other music of the time.

Delta's Enrico Caruso Collection pays tribute
to the talent, the music, and the drive of
one of the most famous people of the 20th
century. These are celluloid writing
instruments in a grand tradition.

On the blog...Apes play charades to communicate

"When humans play charades, the game's ban on
talk often reduces players to wild gestures
in a frustratingly minimalist form of
communication. Still, skillful players get
the point across eventually.

Apes can't talk at all, of course. But now
scientists have found that orangutans rely on
the same kinds of strategies seen in charades
when they try and get their point across."
