His Nibs.com Update --
Mega Monteverde & SwitchCap
October 14th, 2006

Well, the article http://tinyurl.com/jhup4 in the
Sunday New York Times on the
Monteverde Mega Ink*Ball was a resounding success!
We quickly sold-out of our remaining stock (as did
Monteverde). Please see more details within this update
about the latest status of our re-stocking order.
The Acura 'Year of the Dog' pen -- introduced in the
last newsletter -- was also a big hit. There are a
lot of dog lovers out there. I'm not as sanguine
about next year's offering...the 'Year of the Pig'
The three colors of the Acura SwitchCap pens that
are still available -- red, blue and purple -- are
now back in stock.

Monteverde Mega update

This week has been extremely busy -- not much sleep
for 'His Nibs'! -- as the onrush of orders for the
Mega Ink*Ball has been a bit overwhelming as a
result of the exposure afforded by the New York
Times article.
Monteverde itself was unprepared for the response.
Although I placed a large re-stocking order on
Tuesday, that has not yet been shipped to me.
Apparently the ink that is included with the pen is
shipped to them separately, and must then be mated
with the gift box that contains the Mega and its
extra points. This must then be boxed and sealed for
shipment.
Monteverde waited most of the week for their latest
shipment of ink, and are now in the process of
packaging many thousands of gift boxes.
I must apologize to the more than one hundred
customers who I told in the beginning of the week
that I expected my re-stocking shipment to arrive by
Friday the 13th (that date should have told me
something to begin with!). Unfortunately, that's
what *I* was told. I do not yet have confirmation
from Monteverde that my order is on its way...but
please check the Mega page, linked below, for the
latest updates as I receive them. It currently says
Monteverde expects to ship to me toward the
end-of-the-week of October 16th, but that's
to alert customers placing new orders to the delay.
I certainly hope that they'll be moving my way
closer to the beginning than the end of the week!
If this unfortunate delay causes an undue hardship
for anyone on the waiting list, please feel free to
email me to arrange for a refund.
Again, my apologies.

Acura Year of the Dog

Like the Dragon, Serpent and Purple Grapes models,
the Year of the Dog pen has an intricately detailed
overlay in pewter, fashioned atop its black lacquer
barrel. Available in both a fountain pen and
rollerball version, these pens are slightly smaller
than their predecessors, but are full-sized nonetheless.
The pens measure 5-3/8" capped, and 4-1/2" for the
rollerball, 4-3/4" for the fountain pen with cap
removed. Like the other Acura overlay pens, the cap
is *not* designed to post. The circumference is also
a bit slimmer than the other overlays. All-in-all, a
very comfortable pen for any sized hand.

Acura SwitchCap

When capped, these diminutive pens only measure
about 4", enabling them to fit anywhere. But,
there's a twist...literally. When you unscrew the
cap, threads magically appear at the end of the
barrel, ready to have the cap posted and extending
the length of the pen to a very comfortable 5-1/4".
These unique pens blend gorgeous Italian resin --
with various color swirls and patterns that prevent
any two pens from appearing the same -- with chromed
brass in a matte finish for the barrel of the pen.
The gold trim rings add the perfect design accent.

On the blog....Honey makes a medical comeback
When Jennifer Eddy first saw an ulcer on the left
foot of her patient, an elderly diabetic man, it was
pink and quarter-sized. Fourteen months later,
drug-resistant bacteria had made it an
unrecognizable black mess.
"He preferred death to amputation, and everybody
agreed he was going to die if he didn't get an
amputation," said Eddy, a professor at the
University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and
Public Health.
With standard techniques exhausted, Eddy turned to a
treatment used by ancient Sumerian physicians,
touted in the Talmud and praised by Hippocrates:
honey. Eddy dressed the wounds in honey-soaked
gauze. In just two weeks, her patient's ulcers
started to heal. Pink flesh replaced black. A year
later, he could walk again.
"I've used honey in a dozen cases since then," said
Eddy. "I've yet to have one that didn't improve."
