His Nibs.com update -- Wing Sung NOS
His Nibs.com Update --
Wing Sung NOS
September 16th, 2006
This week's update is much briefer than last week's
rather large 'I need to clear out some odds
and ends to make room for some new models
coming....sale' (thanks every one for making
it such a success)! This week's brings an old
favorite back. For
those of you who have been customers of His Nibs since
the '90s, you may recall that I used to also carry
Shanghai's 2nd largest pen manufacturer -- Wing Sung
(now defunct).

I was able to purchase the remaining Wing Sung NOS
(new, old stock) of a pen shop outside Shanghai (so
quite limited numbers), and the first model up is
the '237', which I carried in the past. It's first
up because they arrived today and I still had a copy
of the original webpage and photos to use!
I'll be introducing two other models in the coming
weeks.

Wing Sung #237

While Hero has designed quite a few pens based on
earlier Parker models, the Wing Sung pens were more
of an homage to Sheaffer. Most notable is the use of
a Triumph-style wrap-around nib, which Uranus also
sports on its Silver
Ribbons http://www.hisnibs.com/uranus_309.htm model.
The '237' is an interesting amalgam. The utilitarian
steel
slip cap has a simple, bent-over clip, adorned with
a 'W', and the bottom of the cap is engraved with
the Chinese characters for 'Wing Sung', '237' and
'Made in China'. This is in contrast to the quite
attractive rolled celluloid of the barrel
and section, which is outfitted with a
gold-plated, Triumph-style nib. I was a bit jarred
at first by the steel cap and end-piece on the
barrel, with a gold-plated nib...but the appearance
has grown on me with time. The nib has 'Made in
China' and the Chinese characters for 'Wing Sung'
again. Unscrewing the barrel reveals an ink-view
window at the front of the pump-style
filler, for use with bottled ink. Overall, a
medium-sized pen, measuring a little over 5-1/4"
capped, and about 5-3/4" posted.
I was able to obtain three colors...brown, red and
orange.

On the blog...A planet so light it would float on water
"Scientists have discovered an unusually large and
light planet orbiting a star that could force them
to re-examine theories about how planets are formed.
"The planet, dubbed HAT-P-1, is roughly one-third
larger than Jupiter but weighs only half as much,
astronomers with the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for
Astrophysics said Thursday.
"The planet is about one-quarter the density of
water, Harvard-Smithsonian fellow Gaspar Bakos in a
statement. 'It's lighter than a giant ball of cork.'
he said."
