His Nibs.com update -- Acura Purple Grapes & PR Supershow Green

His Nibs.com Update --
Acura Purple Grapes & PR Supershow Green
July 27th, 2006

This week we introduce another spectacular overlay
pen from Acura, which I've named the Purple
Grapes. The intricate overlay design rivals
that of the Dragon and Serpents models that we've
sold for many years. Best of all, it's on an
introductory sale until July 31st!

We now have Private Reserve's newest ink in
stock...the Special Edition D. C. Supershow
Green, which joins the Supershow
Blue that's offered in limited quantities each year at
this time (the show (http://www.pencentral.com/penshow/) runs from August 10-13...unfortunately we're going
to miss attending it this year).

We've received a small order of the Monteverde
Mega Ink*Ball pens...the pen that's seemingly
impossible to keep in stock!

I was informed by Monteverde this week that the
Cambria line has been discontinued -- much to my
disappointment. I've ordered what stock was left,
but the Black Knight has already completely sold out.

The overlay comes in a pewter, with an antique
silver-plate finish. What differs from those previous
models is the underlying barrel, which in this case is
a beautiful purple lacquer. The pen itself is of brass
construction, so these large pens are no
lightweights. Measuring 5-5/8" capped, these pens
are not designed to have their caps posted. When
writing, their 5" length is perfectly balanced for
extended writing sessions, even with the extensive
grape vine overlay on top of the lacquer barrel.
These large, stunning pens will stand out in any
company of writing instruments!

D.C. Supershow Green now joins the always popular
Blue. Both are special edition inks -- limited in
quantity each year -- to celebrate the biggest pen
show in world.

Monteverde MEGA Ink*Ball

The MEGA continues to be a phenomenal hit -- it's
profiled in this month's Stylus magazine -- and is
tough for both Monteverde and their retailers to keep
in stock. After filling the latest waiting-list orders, we
have a few left.

I've seen a couple of posts on pen discussion
boards -- as well as one of my own customers --
who mentioned that they experienced 'hard-starting'
with the Mega. Speaking with Monteverde, they
recommended that after filling the converter with
bottled ink, one should twist the converter knob back
in the opposite direction slightly to fully lubricate the
writing tip. That seems to solve the problem.

Monteverde Cambria retired

I was very disappointed to learn this week of the
demise of the Cambria line of pens. They've always
done very well for me, and were one of my personal
favorites. Apparently, not so for Monteverde overall.

There a classic, large torpedo-shaped pen, that
came in four great 'colors', although I sold the last
Black Knight available earlier this week. I've
purchased the remaining stock of three colors --
which are on their way to me now -- but when
they're gone....

So, a final tribute from some customers that felt as I
did about the pen:

"I just received my Cambria. Man alive, this pen
writes beautifully and it feels so good in the hand. It
is well balanced and is smooth. I love this pen and I
love the red. I think this will be my favorite in a
collection that is closing in on about 85 pens. Nice
that it has a converter for well ink. I didn't expect
that." T. R., Lake Mary, FL

"The Monteverde Cambria is a work of art and
writes great."
Bill M., Merced, CA

"I'm very pleased with the Monteverde Cambria
pen I received. It's a beautiful pen at a great price
and writes very well."
Robert J., Albuquerque, NM

"I think it's a wonderful pen, classic simple design,
great weight and very well made. Its my favorite of
all the Monteverde ones so far."
Roy W., Glasgow, UK

"The Cambria arrived. It is beautiful and writes like
a dream. I had been looking for a pen that was
reminiscent of my grandfather's, and this one is
that."
M.J., Mooresville, IN

First, get all of the jokes about the photo's
resemblance to His Nibs out of your
system now...

"It is the holy grail of human paleontology, a window
on a crucial moment in our evolution. Last week
scientists at the Max Planck Institute in Germany
announced they would attempt to sequence the
Neanderthal genome?the complete DNA of the
closest known relative to modern humans, a species
that disappeared from the Earth about 30,000 years
ago. It is the next best thing to having a living
Neanderthal for comparison?and, in theory, if you
know all the genes, you could create living
Neanderthals. Not that anyone has any plans to do
that."
