His Nibs.com update -- Shu Fa by Lai Yee
His Nibs.com Update --
Shu Fa by Lai Yee
March 26th, 2006

Something a bit different in this update. His Nibs is
proud to present 'Shu Fa by Lai Yee'! Shu Fa is the
pinyin name for Chinese brush calligraphy, and Lai
Yee is the Chinese name of, well, 'Her Nibs',
aka Teresa Haase (or as I refer to her, the 'Goddess
of the Universe').
We'll let this update focus on Lai Yee rather than
pens, but we'd be remiss if we didn't mention the
passing of Addwaita at age 250! Take a look at 'On
the blog' to learn more.

Shu Fa by Lai Yee

Shu Fa, or Chinese brush calligraphy, is a unique art
form that has been practiced for more than 3000
years in Asia by its greatest artists and literati.
Unlike western calligraphy, which often strives to
repeatedly reproduce perfect letter forms, eastern
calligraphy treats each written character as an
expression of the soul of the artist at that one
moment in time, and quite revealing or their
personality.
Lai Yee -- better known to some as Teresa Haase --
or 'Her Nibs' -- is also a teacher, and a long-time
student of Shu Fa, having begun her studies in Hong
Kong when she was only five.
Lai Yee produces hand-written Shu Fa on a number
of items, including framed paper, T-shirts and tote
bags (with more items to follow). She can produce
custom work to your specifications in various color
combinations, with or without English translations
shown. Chinese uses characters rather than an
alphabet, so names cannot be directly translated
from English to Chinese. However, Chinese
characters can be chosen which approximate the
English pronunciation. Most often, customers choose
to have their given, personal name, written in
Chinese characters, but a surname, or family name,
can also be done.

On the blog...A Remarkable Life: Tortoise Dies at 250

"One of the world's oldest creatures, a giant tortoise
believed to have been about 250 years old, has died
in the Calcutta zoo where it spent more than half its
long life.
Addwaita, which means 'the one and only' in the local
Bengali language, was one of four Aldabra tortoises
brought to India by British sailors in the 18th century.
Zoo officials say he was a gift for Lord Robert Clive
of the East India Company, who was instrumental in
establishing British colonial rule in India, before he
returned to England in 1767.
Long after the other three tortoises died, Addwaita
continued to thrive, living in Clive's garden before
being moved to the zoo in 1875..."
