His Nibs.com Update --
Monteverde Mauna Kea
February 11th, 2006

This week brings the release of the second model in
Monteverde's 'Mountains of the World' series...the
Mauna Kea. Although I've only stocked the fountain
pen version to start, like it's predecessor -- the
Cortina (now retired, but with a few pens left) -- it
also comes in a fineliner/rollerball, as well as a
ballpoint version.
The latest -- and perhaps last -- batch of 150 Speeno
pens are just about history. The reason that the
webpage has remained saying 'Sold out' is that these
have all been going to those on the waiting list. I
have notified everyone at this point (although I have
a nagging feeling that one person wasn't added to
the list that should have been -- please contact me
if you had asked to be added, and haven't heard
back from me). As there are still a few people that
haven't given me their confirmed order yet, I *may*
have a couple left over...but won't know for a couple
of days.
I've had quite a few inquiries about the new
Monteverde Mega Ink*Ball pens, advertised in the
new issue of Pen World. As often happens,
advertisements are published before the stock
actually arrives, so at the moment Monteverde is still
deciding about pricing, item numbers, etc. For those
of you that don't subscribe to Pen World http://www.penworld.com/ [1], or
haven't
received your issue yet (Feb./March, pg. 45), the
Mega will come in two sizes and I've quoted from the
ad's copy below. I hope to get one next week to test.

Monteverde Mauna Kea fountain pen

No. 2 of the series...The beauty, color and majesty
of the World's most immortal mountains are sculpted
by Monteverde designers into treasured writing
instruments. The Monteverde Mauna Kea is
Monteverde's Second Edition in the monumental
Mountains of the World collection.
All Monteverde Mauna Kea Mountains are hand-
crafted from the finest European-grade acrylic resins.
Each captures the subtle hues of Hawaii's
breathtakingly beautiful volcano. From sea floor to
summit, Mauna Kea measures 5.6 miles in height,
standing as the tallest peak in Hawaii. Its last
eruption occurred over 3500 years ago.
The Mauna Kea cap is created from a single piece of
the finest European-grade acrylic resin. The result is
a design that runs naturally uninterrupted. Every
Mauna Kea writing instrument is presented in an
elegant, wood-trimmed case with a magnetic closure.

The Speeno

It's kind of a tease to show the Speeno again in this
update, when I probably won't have any more to sell,
but this little powerhouse deserves its moment in the
Sun
.
My buyer is Stateside at the moment, but when he
returns to China in about a month, he's going to try
and get one more order together of these, and
confirm again that they're no longer being produced.
So, I'll start yet another waiting list, for those who
wish to keep their fingers crossed.

Monteverde's upcoming Mega Ink*Ball

"The first luxury rollerball that fills like a fountain
pen. The new Mega Ink*Ball fills and writes just
like a treasured fountain pen! The rollerball head dips
in ink and a threaded converter draws any color ink
imaginable! The Monteverde Mega Ink*Ball offers the
smoothest and most versatile liquid writing
experience available today!
Mega is offered in tow sizes: an oversized pen in rich
black for those who live big, as well as a luxurious
burgundy pen presented in a slightly smaller size that
is perfect for everyone else.
Both Mega sizes are made of hand-turned Italian-
grade acrylic resins, and are presented in special
luxury kits that include 3 extra front sections and a
bottle of highest quality Monteverde in. Mega
Ink*Ball gift boxes are crafted like fine furniture to
complete a truly Mega experience."
Despite all of the exclamation points and hyperbole :-
), they do seem like very interesting pens. I'll keep
everyone appraised as I find out more.

On the blog....Star Trek fan files for bankruptcy
This could have so easily been me
......
"A Star Trek fan has filed for bankruptcy after
spending almost $71,000 converting his home into
the Starship Voyager.
Tony Alleyne, 52, wanted to convert his studio flat in
Hinckley, Leicestershire, into an exact replica of the
TV spacecraft, The Sun newspaper in London reports.
The home has moulded walls, touch-panel blue
lighting, a life-size model of the shows transporter
room and a command console.
The former DJ also reshaped his windows to look like
portholes and set up vertical lights so he can pretend
to be beamed up, just like the shows characters
Captain James T Kirk and Spock.
But after flying his way through two loans and 14
credit cards in a bid to not only build his dream
home, but also market the space-age renovation for
other people's homes, the fan has come crashing
down to earth, broke.
The Sun reports he has now filed for bankruptcy,
citing debts of $392,000, and may have to sell his
Starship."
