His Nibs.com Update --
DUKE Mako & Khaki Squares
December 12, 2005

Sorry to inundate you with two emails in one week,
but this is just to let everyone know that DUKE and
Uranus pens are back-in-stock for the holidays. This
includes the Mako and Khaki Squares, which sold out
within days of their introduction the first time around.
The little Speeno has definitely been the hit this
year, as we've been filling orders for hundreds of
them these past few days. There will be a lot of
them showing up in Christmas stockings this year. In
fact, they even prompted a 'conversation' between a
customer and Santa Claus...which you can read
below.
...and on the blog...sending email to your future self!

DUKE Mako

The Mako pen series are modified torpedo-shaped,
full-sized pens, that make use of DUKE's brilliant new
resin finishes in the case of the green and brown --
or the classic sleekness of the all-black and chrome
model. Interestingly, there's another difference worth
noting. The green and brown model measure 5-1/4"
capped and 6-1/8" posted, while the black is a
slightly larger model, at 5-1/2" capped and 6-1/2"
with the cap posted.

DUKE Khaki Squares

I struggled a bit in finding a name for this pen (DUKE
tends to only number models, and this is #929), and
actually spent quite a bit of time reviewing color
charts to find one. I wanted to highlight the rather
fetching appearance of this color and although I
never found an exact match, the closest I came to
was 'dark khaki'. Matched with the sharply defined
squares that cover the cap and most of the barrel,
the moniker was born.

'Ode to a Speeno'

One of our customers, Tom Brent, sent in the
following 'conversation' after his first order of
the little pen, which I think of as an 'Ode to a
Speeno'.
Santa Claus: What would you like for Christmas,
young man?
Me: Well...I would love a pen that would be durable
and compact enough to fit in my pant's pocket or on
a key ring. It would write smoothly and have a very
fine point so that I could write in a small calendar.
Preferably, I would like it to be a fountain pen...a
hooded nib would be perfect. If possible, I would like
it to expand in size so that it would be a comfortable
fit for my hand. I would like an easy fill system that
uses bottled ink instead of cartridges. Oh yes...if it
could have a cap that somehow screws on so that it
doesn't come loose in my pocket...I have enough ink
stained clothing.
Santa Claus: So what you are telling me is that you
would like a pen that is a combined version of a
Fisher Space Pen in size, a Parker 51 in a fill system,
and an expanding mechanism like the Rotring
Expandable Pen.
Me: Exactly.
Santa Claus: We could make something like
that...it's just that it would be too expensive to
produce. An Ipod would be cheaper...How about an
Ipod?

On the blog...Email to the future
Although time travel technology doesn't exist yet
that would enable a person to visit their future self,
you can send an email to the person you will become
via FutureMe.org (http://futureme.org/ [4]),
which lets you specify a date, up to 2035. Forbes.com
(http://tinyurl.com/9ck4w [5]) recently ran a similar experiment, collecting
email 'time capsules' to be sent out over the next 20
years.
As if we didn't have enough to do getting this year's
Christmas cards done!
