His Nibs.com Update
Dinuoyang #818
November 12, 2005

In last week's update we began to introduce a series
of new Chinese pen brands and models. The cute
little Speeno (http://www.hisnibs.com/speeno.htm)
was a bit of a hit....it sold out in 3 hours and I
have a waiting list of about 100 more now.

I expect to be re-stocked in a few weeks, still in time
for the holidays I hope, so please feel free to email
me if you'd like to be added to the list.

This week's introduction is of the Dinuoyang #818, a
somewhat iridescent, copper-colored beauty, that
keeps finding its way into my daily rotation. It's a
smooth, well-balanced writer that receives a lot of
complimentary comments.

For those of you who subscribe to Pen
World (http://www.penworld.com/) magazine, the
current issue (November) has a long article focusing
on the re-emergence of the 'fineliner', with particular
attention paid to the Monteverde Riviera and Cortina
versions.

On the blog, the perfect gift for someone who has
everything.

Dinuoyang #818

A full-sized pen (5-1/2" capped, 6-1/8" posted), the
#818 has an iridescent shimmer to it's copper-
colored lacquer finish
that is hard to capture in a photograph, but really
shows up in the light. Despite its underlying brass
construction, it's quite light and comfortably slender,
seeming to fit well large and small hands alike.

Monteverde Riviera fineliner

As Barry Robinson says in his Pen World article,
entitled Drawing a Finer Line, "Just
when you thought it was safe to dismiss them as a
vestigial relic of the recent past, fibertip or porous
point refills for fine pens are back."

Also known as needlepoints, these pens have --
again in the words of Mr. Robinson -- "...a writing
sensation that I would describe as being somewhere
between a pen point and a brush."

Monteverde Cortina fineliner

Ok, what's a fineliner? Monteverde has brought back
a writing experience from the 60's and 70's, a fiber-
tip point (like the Flair, Razor Point and Sign pen --
for those of us old enough to remember) to
complement the more conventional capless rollerball.

The fineliner cartridge employs a capillary-fed liquid
ink system, cushioned to minimize wear-and-tear on
the fiber-tip (unlike some of those earlier models), for
a unique 'feel' when writing. It has a 1 mm point, and
many find it to be a bit more expressive than a
rollerball refill.

On the blog....Enormous Nuclear Bunker for Sale

From BBC News: "A nuclear bunker made to house
the government and civil servants in the event of
nuclear attack is for sale.

The existence of the underground complex at
Corsham, Wiltshire, was kept secret until recently,
but the Ministry of Defence is now inviting buyers.

Built in the late 1950s, the bunker covers many acres
and was decommissioned in the 1980s.

It is underground - more than 100ft (30m) down -
and includes a kitchen and BBC studio."

The BBC website also has a short video tour of the
bunker's interior.
