His Nibs.com Update
Columbus, Intrigues and Typewriters , oh my!
October 29, 2005
The DUKE Columbus is once again in stock, but I only
have a couple left as I write this. One of the most
unique designs in 'pendom', it sports a very smooth
14K gold nib and has a body made of copper!

Speaking of unique designs, the Sheaffer Intrigue is
certainly that, with it's...well...intriguing filling
system. It's on sale and is a terrific writer.
The DUKE/Uranus Blue Pearl pen is sold as a ballpoint,
but I've decided to make it into a true combo pen by
including a free capless rollerball and gel refill as well.
This 3-in-1 beauty has a eye-catching -- and finger-
catching -- texture, capped by a beautiful polished
stone.
Another DUKE offering this week is the ivory
Complete Esteem model. I'm not sure whether using
it brings you complete esteem from others, or
whether you'll just hold it in such regard yourself, but
it's a lovely and inexpensive fountain pen that's been
a big hit.
Finally, on the blog, we have the story of the
typewriter and one of its prime collectors...who also
has a fondness for collecting fountain pens.

DUKE Columbus

"Impressive quality, right down to the packaging!
Nicer than many pens costing three times as much --
even my husband likes this one and he doesn't even
like fountain pens!!!" S.Q., Murrieta, CA
"Norman, I received the pen today and it is
everything I expected. Thank you so much for the
quick turnaround on this order. The Columbus has
now replaced my Namiki Vanishing fountain pen as my
every day favorite. The light medium nib is a little
larger than my fine but it is so nice. Thank you so
much and I will definitely be looking again at your
selection or pens. Your loyal customer" A.R.,
Mundelein, IL
"Lo and behold! This is a knighthood of pens. I'm
used to a Parker 45, this is definitely another feeling.
It's heavier, feels really solid (I dislike plastics, so
this is my style), and it handles very easily. After
filling it - no snags or whatever, just turn the bubbles
out then the ink in - it started writing smoothly,
already more smoothly than my Parker of many years
of writing. This is a real fountain pen and I like it very
much indeed. I may be one of the few in Holland
having such a beauty!" A.S., Rotterdam, Netherlands
The DUKE Columbus offers a stunning design in a full-
sized pen. Measuring 5-3/8" capped, and 5-1/2"
posted, the iridescent blue, highly textured barrel is
actually made from copper! DUKE has found a
process which somehow fuses this gorgeous cobalt
blue to the alternating high-gloss smooth sections
and to the elongated, 'pebble'-textured 'x' patterns.
It's like no other finish I've seen, and the photos
don't really do it justice.

Sheaffer Intrigue

Meet the Sheaffer Intrigue, a collection of fine
writing instruments that is unlike any other. Intrigue
is the result of years of research, achieving the
fusion of extraordinary design, groundbreaking
technology and exceptional performance in a way
that defies convention. The look is sophisticated and
sleek. The style energetic, contemporary and high-
tech. The feel is comfortable and precise.
The patent-pending filling system with sliding drawer
allows for no-mess bottle filling, as there's no need
to unscrew the writing unit to fill the converter. The
sliding drawer chamber makes for simple loading and
unloading of cartridges (two are included in the new
gull-wing Sheaffer gift box, as well as a converter for
bottled-ink).

DUKE/Uranus Blue Pearl

They measure about 5-1/2" with point extended, and
extension/retraction is accomplished by a simple
twist-action of the pen top...right where 'DUKE' is
engraved. The rear of that band says '108', the
model number, and the top is adorned with a lovely
polished stone, with deep burgundy and purple
swirls...which I have yet to learn the identify of!

On the blog....The 'Norman Transcript' and typewriters galore
"The history of the typewritten word is a lesson in
clumsy marketing, society's changing values and
America's economic cycles over the past 150 years."
"Much of it is on display at Copelin's Office Center,
425 W. Main, St. where old, black typewriter
specimens looking more like industrial machines than
office appliances squat on glass shelves. Had they
been equipped with the memory and storage
functions of today's computers, they might well tell
us something of their owners and users, long since
gone."
....""Ed Copelin, owner of the office supply business
for 22 years, said he has been ?haphazardly?
collecting antique typewriters, adding machines and
cash registers for about half that time"..."He also has
an extensive fountain pen collection and hosts a
fountain pen show every few years. Collectors use
the show to buy, sell and trade writing instruments."
