His Nibs.com update -- DUKE Viceroy Golden Rain
His Nibs.com Update
Duke Viceroy Golden Rain
September 20, 2005

This week's update brings the introduction of the
second model of the new DUKE Viceroy series, the
Golden Rain. Although the lines of the pen
are the same, you'll see quite a difference in the
finish and appearance!
We have also received the refills for the Parafernalia
Revolution fountain pens, as well as the fineliner
refills for the Monteverde Riviera and Cortina.
NOTE: Many of you who are long-time customers
have missed previous updates since I switched to
Constant Contact, for which I apologize. I've finally
caught up (adding those customers with names
beginning with W, X, Y and Z) last night. This had to
be done manually (I'll spare you the reasons why) by
culling through thousands of names and email
addresses, so it took awhile!

The DUKE Viceroy Golden Rain

The Golden Rain pattern bears a striking resemblance
to the Golden Waves pattern used by Hero on many
of it's models, such as the '900' http://www.hisnibs.com/'900'_series.htm
and the '58' http://www.hisnibs.com/'58'_series.htm series. The
DUKE Golden Rain pattern is a bit denser however,
and is encased within a resin finish, so that the feel
is quite smooth. The cap top, barrel bottom and
center ring are all rendered with a matte finish, which
provides a lovely visual balance to the rest of the
pen...which captures light beautifully.

On the blog...NASA estimates $104 billion for return to moon

"Despite a stalled space shuttle program, NASA is
confident it can launch and sustain human
exploration of the moon by 2018, the space agency's
top official said Monday.
The $104 billion plan calls for an Apollo-like vehicle to
carry crews of up to four astronauts to the moon for
seven-day stays on the lunar surface. The
spacecraft, known as the Crew Exploration Vehicle or
CEV, could even carry six-astronaut crews to the
international space station or fly automated resupply
shipments as needed, NASA Administrator Michael
Griffin said.
'Think of it as Apollo on steroids,' Griffin said as he
unveiled the agency's lunar exploration plan during a
much-anticipated press conference at its Washington
headquarters. 'Unless the U.S. wants to get out of
manned spaceflight completely, this is the vehicle we
need to be building.'"

Forgotten Favorites...Hero Purple Palette

The name I've given this lovely pen is something of a
misnomer, as the beautiful multi-hued resin reflects a
number of colors, including blue, black and coral. This
lovely, variegated appearance immediately reminded
me of the paint splotches on an artist's palette or
drop cloth.
Measuring 5-1/4" capped, and a full 6" posted, the
pen nevertheless feels like a 'mid-sized' model to me,
due to it's nicely tapered, but fairly slim girth for a
pen of this size. The wide center band (mostly on
the barrel, but with a thin ring at the cap bottom) is
engraved with 'Hero' in script, and underneath
that '2016'. The design of the band itself is quite
reminiscent of that on the S. T. Dupont
Olympia/Orpheo. The gold-plated highlights are
carried through on the clip (engraved with the
Hero 'H' logo), clip band, and crowning gold 'jewel'
atop the cap.
