His Nibs.com Update
Duke Viceroy Chrome interlay
September 3, 2005

Hello all,

This week's update brings the introduction of the
first model of the new DUKE Viceroy series (I expect
several other models in the series to arrive within the
coming week), the Viceroy Chrome interlay.

Like the new Ruby http://www.hisnibs.com/ruby.htm
and Sapphire http://www.hisnibs.com/sapphire.htm
models (sold out, but being replenished
this week as well), this pen makes use of what I've
come to call an interlay design. Although it
appears to be a conventional overlay at first blush,
upon closer examination it's as if the metal design is
actually embedded within the black lacquer of the
pen and virtually flush with its surface.

NOTE: Many of you who are long-time customers
have missed previous updates since I switched to
Constant Contact, for which I apologize. I'm still in
the middle of recovering from my computer problems
of several weeks ago, and unfortunately I'm having
to do email updating manually (I won't go into all of
the gory details). This may still take several weeks,
and I thank you for your patience as I cull through
many thousands of email addresses.

The DUKE Viceroy Chrome

Here's a pen that attracts immediate attention!
Reminiscent of some Gothic bar tracery I've seen,
the most common reaction I've received is that it
evokes the electrical discharge branching sometimes
seen in major lightning storms, or conversely, snow
tracery. Whatever your interpretation, it's a stunning
look for a pen, at a surprisingly affordable price.

On the blog...Spirit Rover reaches summit

"NASA's Mars rover Spirit is experiencing the robotic
high life--literally--now that it has reached to top of
Husband Hill after a slow, year-long climb.

Perched some 270 feet--about the height of the
Statue of Liberty--above the plains of its Gusev
Crater landing site, Spirit has returned images of
stunning new vistas that include a potential winter
refuge as the Martian seasons progress, mission
scientists said Thursday during a press conference at
NASA's Washington, D.C. headquarters.

"That's no Mt. Everest, but it's a heck of a climb for
our little rover," Steve Squyres, principal investigator
of the rover's science mission at Cornell University in
Ithaca, New York, told reporters. "When we first
touched down at Gusev Crater on Jan. 4, 2004, the
Columbia Hills looked impossibly far away.'"

A few Mako pens left

Like the recently introduced DUKE 960 cloisonné
http://www.hisnibs.com/duke_960.htm pens,
the Mako series has almost sold out.

Unfortunately, I won't be able to re-stock these
models for about a month, as they'll be coming from
Shanghai (a slow boat from China).

Forgotten Favorites -- Monteverde DIVA Oceana

The second-generation of DIVA retractable pens, the
Oceana is slightly larger than its predecessor, but
still very compact when closed.
