His Nibs.com Update
The Mako
August 28, 2005

Hello all,

As mentioned in last week's update, I obtained a
number of new DUKE models from my supplier at the
D.C. Supershow two weeks ago. Although it will be a
number of weeks before we each receive our full
complement of stock from Shanghai, I didn't want to
wait to introduce these new models.

So, joining the Sapphire http://www.hisnibs.com/sapphire.htm
(which has already sold out) and the two new
Cloisonné models introduced last week http://www.hisnibs.com/duke_960.htm,
I'm excited to present to you the model that I hinted at in my last
update...the Mako.

The DUKE Mako series

Comprising three pen finishes, the Mako is a full-sized
pen (actually, the all-black is a bit larger than the
other two) which manages to capture the power,
speed and grace of this denizen of the deep.

I showed this pen to a customer (thanks Rick
Conner), minutes after having received it myself at a
pen show, and without mentioning a name, his
immediate comment was that it reminded him of a
shark! I'd say that DUKE succeeded with their design
intentions.

I have very limited quantities of the pen at the
moment, but more are on their way from China, so
feel free to place an advance order should they
show 'sold out' by the time your read this.

On the blog...Einstein's pen

Although the giving of a personal fountain pen as a
mark of respect between academic colleagues and
friends -- as depicted in the Russell Crowe movie
A Beautiful Mind was apparently apocryphal,
the idea may have stemmed from a real-life exemplar.

In 1921 Albert Einstein presented his friend, and
fellow theoretical physicist, Paul Ehrenfest with the
fountain pen that he had used to write down his
research on General Relativity. Now that's a
gift!

The pen itself is on display at the Boerhaave Museum
in Leiden. Just click on the title 'Einstein's pen' when
you go to the weblog below, and it will take you to a
more detailed article.

Forgotten Favorites -- Monteverde Grafica

Here's where I remind people of great writing
instrument models that sometimes get lost on the
ever-enlarging website. This week it's one of the first
sketching pencils, introduced by Monteverde several
years ago...the Grafica.

Here we have one in the Stained Glass finish.

Forgotten Favorites -- DUKE Complete Esteem

Here's an inexpensive fountain pen with a uniquely-
shaped nib, available in both Red Ocre and Ivory,
worth taking a look at again.
