Blotter Paper?

What do you folks use for blotting paper to prevent smudges?
I've been using an Ampad quadrille ruled engineering pad and another higher grade Ampad writing pad. The higher quality paper keeps the ink from feathering but also keeps the ink from immediately drying out as it feathers. As a result I have to be careful when shuffling recently written pages.

Blotter Paper

I'm not quite sure I understand what you mean.

you said, "The higher quality paper keeps the ink from feathering but also keeps the ink from immediately drying out as it feathers."

But having had the same "types" of problems, I have tried almost everything. I have used & still do use the Ampad paper & find it to be about as good as it gets for the price. Having said that, I had a problem with the ink drying out to slowly as you mentioned. My solution was to try the "Swisher" ink. I read the article they posted to their web site a few months ago about the ink being fast drying. It is made by the same man that makes "Noodler's" ink. I believe it is a collaboration between the two of them to develop the ink.

It is great ink. It is very fast drying & the Antigua Blue is the prettiest blue I've seen. On the other hand the black is as black as it gets.
It works just fine on the Ampad's I use & does not feather.

I honestly believe this will stop your smudging problem. At any rate I hope so! I also hope as I write this you haven't had the chance to try the Swisher ink yet.

Please let us know if this solves your problem.

re: ampad not feathering

Since the Ampad paper doesn't make the ink feather, the ink kinda sits there and slowly dries. Poorer quality paper would feather out the ink and probably dry it faster. It might be that I write with a heavy hand and these pens are putting out a lot of ink under my writing style.

I'll take a look at Swisher ink too.

Chuch Swisher and Noodler's

You are correct Tommy in that it is a collaboration between the two of them. I met Chuck at the Raliegh Pen Show last year and we talked about it some. I believe Chuck has ideas in his mind on how certain ink should perform and has Nathan (Noodler's) create an ink to his specifications. I believe that's why you'll see Chuck as one of the larger distributor's of Noodler's and their own Swisher custom made line.

Think I'll see about picking up some Antigua Blue at the Atlanta show. Smiling

Swisher ink on the way

I ordered a bottle of Swisher ink from Swisherpens.
See how it goes. Of particular note is I also bought
a Moleskine and so I also need the Swisher fast drying
properties to avoid ink markings on opposing pages when
I close the Moleskine.

Ink for Moleskine

Considering Moleskine, I picked up a bottle of Noodler's Black ink at the Southeastern Pen Show and it seems to have solved my problems with print-through and long drying times. Several Bloggers have recommended Noodler's as the solution for the Moleskine's thin paper, and based on my initial impressions using a Pelikan 200 with Extra Fine nib, I've got to agree. By way of comparison, Parker Quink is less intense in color (blackness) but displays a marginally greater level of print-through with the Pelikan. I've also had good results with a no-name Lamy blue cartridge in the Moleskine as well.

I also picked up a bottle of 2004 DC Supershow Blue this weekend as well, but found that it feathers in the Moleskine when using the Pelikan.

FWIW, I use a piece of cut-to-size kitchen paper-towel in my Moleskine as blotter paper, but haven't needed it since changing to Noodler's

That's great news about the Noodlers.

I don't have the black but should probably get a bottle. I wonder if the other Noodler's waterproof inks would work similar. I have a Moleskine notebook and should probably try some out.

BTW, welcome to the site Art.

Mark, Thanks for the welco

Mark,

Thanks for the welcome. Much to learn about this hobby as I'm a rank beginner.

Did you pick up any of the free blotters?

Usually different people have free blotters with their information on them. I know Richard Binder has some as well as others.

Ink Blotters

You're right Mark, Richard does have ink blotters. He sends one with every pen he sends back to the customer.

Do you know of any others?

Pendemonium and Penspiration

I think I've gotten some from both of them in the past. Don't know about with orders or not, think I just picked some up at the shows. Richard's are nice cause he has that cool art deco pictures on them.

Swisher not so good in my pens on Moleskine

The Swisher ink had really bad feathering coming out of my admittingly wetter flowing Faber Castell Ambition medium point.

I switched back to Noodler's standard black and am now using a new pen, a Faber Castell Ambition fine point, to write in my new moleskines. It doesn't put out as much ink as the medium and the Noodler's, while not as immediately drying as the Swisher, doesn't feather out as much. The fine point, putting out less ink, does seem to dry quicker than the medium point and those spots that do persist do not spot on the opposing page as much if I close it before everything is dry.

I wonder it that's a side effect of quicker drying . . .

that it is more likely to feather?

As far as the drying being an issue have you considered putting a piece of blotter paper in between pages that you have recently written? If you don't have any let me know and I'll send you some. You can then cut it to size to fit in the moleskine.

In a pinch I've found that the course paper hand-towels (non-textured) found in rest rooms does a pretty good job of blotting as well.
